In the field of disaster preparedness, response, and recovery, there is often a recurring question: “How can we create a plan that is adaptable and can be efficiently utilized in the event of an emergency response or recovery?” Furthermore, how can a community develop and sustain a state or organization of preparedness during peaceful times, as we commonly refer to them?
Amidst the 2020 wildfire disaster exacerbated by COVID, we gained direct experience dealing with a large-scale crisis with limited capacity to respond promptly. Numerous organizations, typically prepared for such emergencies, were confined and unable to mobilize resources due to travel restrictions and lockdown measures.
Out of that tragedy emerged a strong feeling of immediacy and individual responsibility to act, a feeling that those who experienced it directly were best suited to capture the lessons learned, record them, and implement them in a way that preserves every bit of history, every narrative shared, and every individual who contributed and was willing to step up from the start and continue until the finish. Those who came on board later would still be welcomed to join the effort and have a place at the table, with the opportunity to contribute continuously. We must ensure that the wisdom of the past is engraved in our hearts and shapes our path toward the future, serving as a beacon of light and a guiding star for our journey.
If I were to summarize the fundamental components that underpin the existence of CCVOAD, I would begin by stating the following: CCVOAD is a community-based network driven by the community, fostering collaboration to bring about positive change. Our organization is dedicated to supporting our partner organizations in enhancing the visibility of their impactful initiatives and effectively communicating their requirements for resources, enabling them to be well-equipped with the necessary support.
In the near future, CCVOAD and our committed team are looking forward to reaching out and collaborating with our Community-Based Organizations, Faith-Based Organizations, and Non-Governmental Organizations as we strive to officially enroll you with us, and expand our readiness, response, and recovery network gradually.
